I like the thorough walk through of events and detailed explanation. Unfortunately, I can't agree with the conclusion. I can't fathom how nine hikers would leave their gear, food, clothes and survival equipment to possibly burn in a smoky tent and walk in their sleeping clothes a mile in subzero temperatures, snow and high winds, while hoping to build another fire -if they possibly could find the material...in the snow...and dark...in socks...with no gloves...on a hill they couldn't see ...in a place they hadn't been before. Meanwhile, back at the tent, a smoky camp stove that had already burned it's fuel to cook dinner defies all of their skills and ability to extract it from a 10 by 8 foot cloth tent. Instead of pulling back the tent doors and throwing the stove into the snow, they collapse the tent and walk away to their doom. They already cut the tent open. Might as well pull it back, drag out the stove and put on their clothes. At least put on more than their sleeping gear before wandering off into frigid misery and almost certain death for no logical reason. These people knew that they had little to no chance of surviving with no protective clothing and it was just a few feet away behind a layer of canvas and smoke. The kind of cold they faced in pajamas was unthinkable. The idea that smoke would force them to abandon all of their clothes and gear to wander off to face frostbite, hypothermia and eventual death by freezing.... No.I don't buy it.

This is the third book I have read on this subject. No one will ever know for certain what happened to the nine students, but this book I believe comes closest to a logical explanation. The author very cleverly sucks you into a false supposition about halfway through the book. You think that he is going to come up with some silly theory about a yeti or some other creature. I almost quit reading at that point but luckily I stuck with it. He goes on to propose a very plausible theory of what happened. I think I will need to read no more books on this subject. If you are interested in this tragedy I think you will find the book very worthwhile.

This is a good read and a very plausible explanation, far more reasonable than some theories put about in books done by legitimate publishers. The maps and photos were extensive and a very useful addition. It alternates between the story of the hikers and the thoughts of the guide hired by the government to find the hikers. Jumping back and forth between the two is mildly annoying to me, but it is a fairly standard device. The guide's viewpoint is one I hadn't read/heard from before. While it's a short book, it still quite comprehensive for what it attempts. This therefore is a good introduction to this incident (particularly given the price), and the author's theory may well be correct.Be aware some of the photos are grisly, (hard to avoid given the subject though). And the writing is not always polished. There were a few grammar, typos in the text. Nothing that bothered me that much, or interfered with my reading the story.SPOILER ALERTAs for the theory of what happened, - in one respect it entirely explains why the hikers left their tent so abruptly and poorly dressed. But I agree with a few other reviewers, it doesn't explain why they then left the environs of the tent, rather than taking steps to resolve the situation, or at least retrieve clothing. The alternative - walking around in -20 degree weather improperly dressed, sure death - doesn't seem sensible or sane. But I think the theory is as good as any other I've read, and so I can recommend this book. That doesn't mean I'm entirely convinced

This story is heartbreaking, frightening, creepy & fascinating! The camaraderie of nine cross-country friends/acquaintances (very little information is included about their interpersonal relationships among each other, except two who apparently were smitten with each other) was shattered within minutes & turned into a horrific tragedy for all within hours! The legends & urban tales of this 1959 mystery ran amok for several years until it was finally investigated properly & thoroughly in relatively more recent years & I think Mr Wilkins has the most cohesive & logical timeline providing his facts are correct. This was not the most polished novel on the subject (there were the usual obvious editing issues) however, it really did not distract from the story, in my opinion. It includes many photographs from the actual would-be adventurers taken during their outing but many also taken by the search & rescuers, many of those who were sadly, friends of the victims. This is likely not the most definitive or polished effort but it does bring some of the more outlandish & expensive books on the subject down to earth & rejects the crazy fables that inevitably find their way in print when all the facts & forensics are not readily forthcoming, for example, this unfortunate incident was due to an UFO encounter, a test missile, the CIA, &, of course, yetis or sasquatch, etc. This account was my first foray into the subject but its facts & evidence are pretty compelling & also, a short but very interesting start for those who would like to investigate this intriguing mystery further!

A blend of fact and fiction, rather than the straight-forward history it purports to be. The author's explanation of the cause of the deaths of the nine skiers is convincing, although foreshadowing makes promises the story will never fulfill. It is not a horror story. Nor is it strictly factual, as the author imagines conversations and actions among a group of people who neither recorded these nor lived to tell what they did and said. Further, the book is full of egregious errors that even the most basic proof-reading should have caught and corrected. The writing is not compelling, even if one is able to look past these extraneous words littering every page of the book, and the author makes the mistake of repeating many statements . . . to the point, at times, of beating dead horses. Or skiers.
